When I started to write the blog entry I thought it sounded a bit like discovering the secrets of the pyramids. I knew in my heart of hearts that real woman do this every day. Everyone is scheduled to the max and time is the most precious commodity. I decided to interview clients, my co-workers, and women from all walks of life to discover the secrets of the quick beauty fixes. Let’s face it, for all of us in the real world, ten minutes is about all the time we have to get ready.I knew these beauty shortcuts existed, and I became determined to uncover each time-saving remedy. After endless conversations I received many tips. Some seemed so totally absurd that at first I dismissed them. Some of the “genius” suggestions included brushing your teeth while taking a shower or laying out your clothes for the next day the night before. After hearing these remarks, I was ready to throw my Blackberry across the room! Then it struck me: Any routine that saves you time is legitimate. There are no rules. All is fair in beauty and the rush to get out the door looking good. I immediately made an attitude adjustment and opened my mind. My mission was to discover the quick fixes that work to keep you looking great every day.
The most universal solution to the problem of looking good in minutes is a great haircut. When your hair is cut right, it will fall into place easily. I am not suggesting that every haircut will be a wash-and-wear style. In fact, there is a noticeable trend this season towards a soft A-line blunt cut without layers. Hair will be worn straighter but with body, bend, and movement. This means that hair will require a bit more grooming. More grooming requires more time to get ready. The solution to this problem is to wash and dry your hair the night before. In the morning, apply a root lift spray product and wrap hair in your largest set of Velcro rollers. Apply your makeup or blast your hair with a hot dryer for a minute or less. Gently remove rollers and softly brush hair. You can do all this before you finish your morning cup of coffee.
The colors are nuanced. The textures are silky. And unfolding the compacts trigger (almost) the same breathlessness as opening a jewelry box from Harry Winston.
I half expected Chanel's new Autumn collection, "Facettes D'Or" to shoot out beams of light as I untied the ribbon, because the entire collection dazzles: It was inspired by Gabrielle (Coco to you) Chanel's gold-walled apartment at 31 rue Cambon.
Here's a quick tour of the highlights:
Le Vernis Gold Fiction. Once it dries, this nail polish could easily pass for 24-karat gold leaf. I'd move quickly on this—we could have another Black Satin situation on our hands.
Les 4 Ombres in Reflets de' Ombre. With pans of dusky gold, brown, champagne, and blue-gray, this eye shadow quad reminds me of beautifully oxidized antiques.
Facettes D'Or Joues Contraste Gold Fever. When I see glamorous women from the 1930s, I always notice two things: One, everyone had amazing cheekbones and two, they knew how to get their glow on. This highly pigmented gold powder gives does both.
Ombres Essentielles in Le Bronze. This bronzer enhances all eye colors, and it doesn't make you look too made up. It's fabulous.
Rouge Hydrabase in Great Copper. Behold, the quintessential autumn lipstick. It's rich and tawny, medium weight, and has a plush velvet finish. It's the kind of lipstick that makes you look put together—even if you only have a few minutes to get out the door in the morning.
The goods are on counters and online now, so hop to it.

1 in 3 women suffer from physical or mental abuse at some point in their lifetimeDespite these shocking figures independent research recently commissioned by The Body Shop in 11 countries around the world discovered that only 21% of women would feel confident seeking help from official authorities such as the police and only 14% would seek a support group in times of need. Under half those questioned would turn to their family. However, 59% of women claim that if affected by domestic violence they would turn to a friend for help. This new discovery inspired The Body Shop to launch the 2008 Stop Violence in the Home campaign on the theme of friendship. By providing practical tools to empower women to provide support to friends in need, the campaign can be a source of inspiration and support for millions of women around the world. As part of the campaign The Body Shop has created a "For Me, For You" Special Edition Shea Lip Care Duo ($15, thebodyshop.com). By simply giving one to a friend you each get a wonderful reminder that you have a confidante whom you can trust, for whom no secret is too big or too small. (And you each enjoy moisturized lips, every time it's applied!) All proceeds from the sale of the Shea Lip Care Duo go directly to their charitable partners whose work supports those who have been affected by domestic violence. Why the Body Shop supports this cause: Domestic violence happens everywhere. At least 1 in 3 women around the world are beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in their lifetime. Usually, the abuser is a member of her own family or someone known to her. Stop Violence in the Home is The Body Shop's global campaign, which was created 10 years ago to inspire customers and employees to get active against domestic violence. Our campaign aims to raise awareness of this issue and generating funds to help those affected. A truly Global campaign: By 2006 the campaign had reached 47 markets across the world. In 2008, Stop Violence in the Home will run in 56 markets. Since the first campaign was launched, millions of dollars have been raised. These funds are vital in the fight to stop domestic violence, but fundraising is only half the story of what our campaign has achieved. Bold, innovative, groundbreaking, even law changing, the achievements of employees and customers in raising awareness and changing attitudes has been truly remarkable. How you can help: Go to www.bodyshop.com and buy the SVITH Lip Care Stick Duo, which will help keep women all over the world safe from violence in their home. The Lip Care Sticks use shea butter and Vitamins A, C, and E to soften and moisturize lips. You keep one stick and give the other to a friend to let her know you are always there for her. Call for government to put protective policies in place to safeguard against abuse, and exposure to abuse. Speak up if you suspect domestic abuse may be happening. And act if you know it is, either by trying to help the victim, or by alerting the authorities.

Williams Sisters Net Gold in Olympic Doubles
Venus and Serena Williams kept up a family tradition Sunday, playing together in the Olympic doubles tournament and walking away with the gold medal. Slugging winners from the baseline and slamming shots at the net, the American sisters overpowered Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain 6-2, 6-0. Serena and Venus Williams celebrate Sunday after beating Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual. When Ruano Pascual sent the championship point long, the sisters shrieked in unison. Then they jumped for joy and hugged. "I'm so excited, I can't even speak," said the 28-year-old Venus, who has already won seven doubles Grand Slam titles and a gold medal in Sydney alongside younger sister Serena. The pair didn't enter the doubles competition in Athens four years ago because Serena was hurt at the time. "To share this kind of moment with your sister," Venus said, "it never grows old." It doesn't hurt when your sister is one of the best in the world. "I don't know anyone out there who would get tired of playing with Venus Williams," said the 26-year-old Serena, who as a singles player is ranked eighth in the world, three spots behind No. 5 Venus. Mom, daughter lead Kenyan village in AIDS recovery
Loyce Mbewa-Ong'udi was late. Family and friends milled around her parents' house in the green hills overlooking Lake Victoria, waiting for the daughter from America to return home. At last the taxi bounced over the ruts and made a sharp turn into the compound of small brick and stucco houses. Loyce sprang out to a shower of greetings in the Luo language, hugs, helping hands for 12 enormous suitcases crammed with anti-AIDS medicines, asthma inhalers, storybooks, pencils and sharpeners, recycled eyeglasses. The supplies were for the Rabuor Village Project, which Loyce runs. In the crowd, she sought the woman who started it all: her mother, Rosemell Ong'udi. (Continue Reading...)
Obama: I Would Not Have Nominated Clarence Thomas
Back on the campaign trail, Sen. Barack Obama declared on Saturday that, had he been president at the time, he would not have nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. The crowd of predominantly evangelical voters clapped with approval Speaking at the values forum at the Saddleback Church, the Illinois Democrat raised objections to several of the more conservative Supreme Court Justices and argued specifically that Chief Justice John Roberts (whom he voted against) had been too willing to grant powers to the Executive Branch. Obama's harshest critique, however, was saved for Thomas. "I would not have nominated Clarence Thomas," said the presumptive Democratic nominee. "I don't think that he..." the crowd interrupted with applause. "I don't think that he was a strong enough jurist or legal thinker at the time for that elevation. Setting aside the fact that I profoundly disagree with his interpretations of a lot of the constitution. I would not have nominated Justice Scalia though I don't think there is any doubt about his intellectual brilliance. Because he and I just disagree. (Continue Reading...)

The Daily Mail (via NY Magazine) reports that industries in the U.K. like banks, airlines and shops can no longer require women to wear high heels in the office.Which means that, prior to this new rule, high heels were a condition of employment. Which means now I'm experiencing an awkward urge to shout, "Sexist pigs!" while packing up my impressive collection of 4-inch daywear shoes in order to move to London and take over for some fed up shopgirls.
The higher the heel, the closer to God and just like Barbie, I was born with feet spring-loaded into a perpetual state of stilettos.
But I can see the flip side. Britain's Trades Union Congress asked employers to stop forcing women to wear shoes taller than 1.5 inches, so we're not talking about starter pumps.
Note to the U.K.: Let a girl do what she wants with shoes. You really want fashion crimes on the books? Tackle VPL and mom jeans.

The Flirty Dozen: How Many Products Do YOU Use Per Day?
Beauty Digest, Beauty Trends, makeup No Comments »
I recently read that women use an average of a dozen personal-care products a day and men use about six (slacking, I think we call that). That stat can't be right. Either that, or I'd like to take a bow as Girl Who Is Leading The Nation In Per Captia Beauty Consumption. And Who Wants To Think Of A Better Title Than That.
My bathroom routine alone clocks in at 5 objets: toothpaste, Philosophy Purity Made Simple Face Wash, shampoo, conditioner, and Philosophy The Microdelivery Mini Peel Pads.
And that's before I've even gotten to the makeup bag - because that product bomb is another 11*. Then we move onto the hair, and that's another 2 for mousse and hairspray. And throughout the day, there are hand lotion applications. Many of them.
That brings my total to 19 products a day. Am I nuts? Or is it the number 12 that's nuts?
*No really, I counted: Kinerase for the eyes, sunblock for the face, then brow powder, primer, foundation/powder (I use Clinique's Almost Powder, the foundation-powder-in-1, so ca-ching! product counter savings!), concealer as needed - and it almost always is, liquid liner, shadow duo (is that two? Or one?), mascara, and, of course, my Benefit Miss Popularity. Gotta be lit up.

Being the product junkie that I am, a few months back I was visiting a MAC counter to pick up some concealer when I was introduced to my new best friend. That friend has been loyal and hasn’t left my side ever since. What or who is this friend I’m referring too, that would be none other than MAC’s Fix ($16) + makeup aqua spritz. I know your probably thinking; I know this girl ain’t talking about water in a bottle. Don’t worry ladies I’m not. What I’m talking about is an old underground fave of makeup artist, an angel in disguise.
Fix+ can be used for any and just about every make makeup routine. Used to set one’s makeup look, over time this product as become a force to be reckon with. The water-based potion is packed with vitamins, minerals and toped off with chamomile, green tea and cucumber extracts. But it doesn’t just finish your makeup, it adds radiance to your look, and hydrates your skin. I’ve often used it as a skin refresher and moisturizer at night instead of typical creams or lotions.
The added bonus and maybe the most beneficial aspect of Fix+ is its ability to multi-task. Fix+ can be used to do any of the following: (1) Set makeup (2) Apply powders like creams (3) Intensify eye shadow (4) Add radiance (5) Hydrate and refresh skin.
It’s MAC, it multi-tasks, its healthy for your skin and it retails for only $16, you can’t beat that!
