Get the Fall 2008 Look: Yves St. Laurent

Beauty Digest, fall 2008, nail polish No Comments »

While looks from straight off the runways are not necessarily meant to be taken literally, I like to incorporate bit of high fashion here and there to enhance my style — particularly on my fingernails.

Each day this week we've been giving away awesome prizes from Yves St. Laurent's beauty line, and that's got me all excited about their fashion lineup. Drawn from YSL's Fall 2008 show, I've got some great nail polish color suggestions so that you can include elements of this minimal, futuristic look into your routine. Take a gander at my widget below for some ideas and check out more of my runway-inspired choices from Karen Walker and Givenchy.

Talking Soft and Natural Hair Color With Posh’s Colorist

Beauty Digest, Johnny Ramirez, fall 2008, hair color, tips No Comments »

The other day, I had a chat with the ultrafriendly celeb colorist Johnny Ramirez, of the Chris McMillan Salon in Beverly Hills, about techniques and products he used for his high-profile client, Victoria Beckham. Ramirez, who trained under famed color guru Michael Canalé (of Jennifer Aniston caramel highlights fame), also talked about where he gets his inspiration, along with color trends for Fall. Here's what he had to say:

On his approach to hair color:

  • "I look at my 4-year-old daughter's hair. She's got Giselle's (Bundchen) hair color. It's an illusion. It looks really, really blonde, but when you crack it open, it's dark blond underneath. It's so natural — she's born with it. So I take that (inspiration from my daughter) and do it on someone that's older."
  • "When someone comes back from vacation, and they have virgin hair (meaning they have no artificial hair color), I always look to see their hairline and how their hair around their face looks. I duplicate that. Sunkissed highlights around the face are so subtle. I'll do (bleached) tips at the bottom, too. . . and comb to blend. When you do this it creates the illusion of soft, beachy hair — like you've been hanging out at the beach all month."

Regarding trends for Fall:

  • "Soft and natural hair colors just make your skin glow like you were born with it. Soft and natural — you just can't go wrong with that. Anytime you go really light or too dark it just doesn't look right, so just keep it very soft."

Chanel Gets Haute for the Holidays

Beauty Digest, Chanel, fall 2008, lipstick, makeup, nail polish No Comments »

It seems like the holidays keep getting bumped up earlier with each passing year. (Target's holiday section was out in full force last week.) But when Chanel does it, somehow I'm ready to do eggnog shots if it means I'll get to play with new beauty goodies.

I had a chance to check out this new color collection, and while it's all pretty, these items wound up on my lusting-after list:

  • Rouge Allure lipstick in Nude, a slightly shimmery, pale nude with just the slightest hint of peach. It gives you that Françoise Hardy look, effortlessly.
  • Poudre Précieuse, a lightweight loose gold powder that can go on the face, shoulders, and décolletage.
  • Le Vernis nail polish in Haute Chocolat. This shade was developed by a Wisconsin high-schooler, and if she wants a career in cosmetics, she'll do very well. It's a warm brown shade with subtle gold flecks — nothing flashy, like "It's 1992; I'm going to a rave!" or anything. Just a lovely color, especially if you're tiring of classic reds and trendy blacks.

Bring Out Your Spicy Side With Cinnamon-Inspired Ingredients

Beauty Digest, Cinnamon, fall 2008 No Comments »

I love these Autumn-inspired ingredients that will have you feeling all toasty inside. I've already got you covered on apple, cranberry, and pumpkin, so let's move on to a crowd favorite, cinnamon.

This spicy ingredient, obtained from the bark of certain evergreen trees, helps reduce oil production in skin, and both warms and invigorates. It's also commonly found in lip plumpers as a natural way to boost the volume of your smoochers. To see some cinnamon-flavored products and colors, check out my widget below for some hot ideas:

Add Zing to Your Life With Cranberry Ingredients for Fall

Beauty Digest, Cranberry, fall 2008 No Comments »

Mmm — Fall's just begun and I'm mad obsessed with the scents of the season. I've already started burning my spicy-smellin' candles, and my apartment is now a fragrant delight. (At least, it is when the cats haven't done their business. TMI?)

Anyway, to get in the spirit of the changing season, all this week I've been featuring products with Autumn-inspired ingredients that will have you feeling all toasty inside. We've already explored the apple, the pumpkin, and cinnamon, so what's left? Cranberry.

Cranberry is not just a side dish your Aunt Mary makes every year for Thanksgiving. Native to North America, this tiny fruit works as a natural anti-bacterial agent. It's also packed with nutrients and antioxidants, making it a wonderful ingredient for staving off the signs of aging. Check out my widget below for some sweet and tart finds:

Channel Your Inner Cinderella with Pumpkin-Inspired Ingredients

Fall arrived on Monday, and that means cooler climates and a crispness to the air. So, to get in the spirit of the changing season, all this week I'm featuring products with Autumn-inspired ingredients that are both cozy and pleasing to the senses.

I've already got you covered on the delicious and nutritious apple, let's move on to the pumpkin. Enzymes from this gourd-like plant are used to gently dissolve dead skin cells, and antioxidants help repair and nourish. Plus, when mixed with spicy ingredients, pumpkin smells rather nice — don't you think? Here are some tasty ideas:

Take a Bite Into Fall With Apple-Inspired Ingredients

Beauty Digest, apple, fall 2008 No Comments »

As you know, it's the first day of Fall. That means colder weather, dryer air, and the impending cozy scents of cinnamon, pumpkin, maple, and apple. So, when do we eat?

To get into the spirit of the new season, all this week I'll be featuring products with Autumn-inspired ingredients. I'll start you off with the delicious and nutritious apple. Whether it be Granny Smith or Jonagold, the apple's powerful antioxidants and natural exfoliating properties will help keep skin soft and glowing. Plus, they smell rather lovely, too. So why not go bobbing for some apples yourself? Here are some tasty ideas:

Small Beauty Updates to Help You Fall Forward

Beauty Digest, fall 2008 No Comments »

Today is the first day of Autumn, which means it's time to update your makeup regimen just a little bit. No need to revamp your entire look immediately: it's much more fun to slowly incorporate some of Fall's trends into your look. Here are some small changes you can make to ease into the new season:

  • Lay off the bronzer. This may seem like a no-brainer, but lots of people cling on to the last remnants of Summer by supplementing their fading tan with bronzing products. Rosy cheeks are the trend for Fall — on your way there, try a rosy cheek stain with a little bronzer over it. Jemma Kidd Rosy Glow Lip & Cheek Tint is my favorite — the stain really sinks in, so the texture won't mix weirdly with your bronzer.
  • Go for a metallic nail polish shade. Dark berry colors with reflective pigments and grays were all over Fall runways. Try Cover Girl Boundless Color Nail Polish in Plum Pudding.
  • Give up the gloss. Makeup artists have been telling me for months that sheer lipstick is replacing gloss, and I can't think of a better time to embrace that then when it gets windy (no one wants her hair stuck to a pair of chapped lips . . . ew!). Try Revlon Sheer Colorstay Lipcolor.
  • Practice your smoky eye. Save it for nighttime for now, but the smoky eye, especially with hints of silver or bronze, is big for Fall. Check out Oscar de la Renta's Fall runway to see what I mean.

Beauty Digest, Bella Poll, fall 2008, makeup, trends No Comments »

Even though I've just returned from Spring 2009 Fashion Week, when it comes to beauty trends, I'm currently looking a little bit more into the near future. I'm all for planning ahead, but first I need to make a few purchases to update my cosmetics bag for Fall 2008.

As the change of season approaches, which fall makeup trend do you think will make it in your shopping cart this Fall? Whatever look you choose, how bold will you go: runway style or a more toned down version?

Update Your Hair With Fall’s Color Trends

Beauty Digest, Debi Dumas, Hair, fall 2008, hair color No Comments »

Maybe you checked out ways to prolong your hair color from celeb stylist Debi Dumas. Now it's time to start thinking about which hair colors you will be prolonging for the upcoming Fall season.

According to Dumas, the latest colors "will coincide with what's going on in fashion." Brighter fabrics and ruby and jewel tones all made appearances on the Fall runways. She says we'll be seeing "warm, but not over-the-top vibrant colors" that will work in tandem with clothing. The idea is to enhance, not compete, with the bolder fabric choices.

For the hair, red-violets and bright, bold tones are out. Natural, soft golden browns and amber tones are in. Gone are the days of heavy streaks, too. Instead, think multilayered and multidimensional — richly diffused warm color around the face.

Dumas is not Jessica Biel's colorist, but Jess has the look — check out how her warm color tones gradiate from dark to light. The effect is soft, subtle, and gives brightness to her face. Need more inspiration? Browse my gallery for fashion and hair-color inspiration when you

Beauty Digest, Hair, Trend Alert, fall 2008 No Comments »
Beauty Gone WildIf you can believe it, fashion week is still happening in some parts of the world. This week marks the end of the 2008 Autumn/Winter shows in Mexico City. Although we may have never heard of designers such as Gustavo Matta, Alberto Rodriguez and Grypho, it's fun to see beauty trends around the world. I've found that Mexico City is over-the-top when it comes to high, voluminous hairstyles and intricate makeup. Here are looks from nine different fashion shows. I can't wait to see what you think of them!
