Earlier today, I was picking up some candy for the neighborhood kiddies, and took a little beauty pit stop down the Halloween aisle. Lo and behold, I discovered this little gem. Seeing that black roses typically have a negative connotation of hatred or death, I was kinda frightened. But, did you know this deep, dark flower also represents the completion of a long, hard journey? Not so scary after all. And in the spirit of Halloween, I think it's kind of clever and cute — er I mean Goth — to package it up into a nifty black polish. Now that I'm all tricked out with my new treat, why not pick one up for yourself at Walgreens ($2.99) — if you dare?
With the wrong Halloween makeup, your cheerleader costume can become a zombie cheerleader costume by the end of the night. Makeup that stays put is imperative in pulling off the ultimate costume. Here are some tips to help your getup last the night:
- Makeup stays longer on hydrated skin. Be sure not to slack on your moisturizer and eye cream.
- Choose a long-wearing or waterproof concealer, like Maybelline Cover Stick Waterproof Concealer. Set it with an oil-absorbing powder.
- Use an eye shadow base or primer, like L‘Oreal De-Crease Eyeshadow base.
- Curl lashes, and use a waterproof mascara if your costume includes it. If you need to wear false lashes, bring extras and glue with you. If you need to wear colored mascara and can’t find one, try Benefit She Laq, which comes with a mascara wand applicator.
- If your disguise requires flushed cheeks, layer more than one kind of blush (mousse, powder, gel, stain) to make the color last longer.
- Long-wearing eye pencil on brows instead of brow pencil. Also use it for fake moles or freckles (that means you, Marilyn).
- If you need to create the illusion of big lips, use concealer all over your lips before applying either liner or lip stain and then lipstick. If you need to tweak the shape, use a reverse lip liner, like DuWop Reverse Lip Liner.
C'est moi! Jackie Lantern here with a little tip before I leave all you beauty-full ladies (don't cry your seeds out - I'll be back next October!)
Still haunting around for a Halloween costume? Do as I do and be inspired by your makeup bag!
Like me: My current fave scent is Music from Harajuku Lovers - so I turned the spritz into my costume. Can you see the resemblance?
Have beauty-full Halloween - just don't make like a pumpkin and do anything rotten.

Running across this photo of Jack White reminded me of a quick, easy way to look spooky for Halloween. With a few items you already have in your makeup bag, you'll be able to transform yourself into a ghost or garage rocker (take your pick).
You don't have to be naturally pale to look a bit spooky, since the reddish eyes are the biggest part of this look. First, apply foundation one or two shades lighter than your own skin tone. Dab concealer around your eyes to cover any circles. Finish it off by brushing blush or lipstick underneath and your eyes. The idea is to create a sickly, feverish look — and even if Jack White wears it as part of his everyday routine, you might as well try it for Halloween.
