Beauty Digest, Sugar Awards 2008, lipstick, mac No Comments »
When it came to the best of lipsticks, MAC was the hands down winner this year, taking over 30 percent of the vote. Much loved for their reasonably priced lipsticks with every type of color and texture imaginable, it's clear to see why MAC came out on top. And as for my winner? I'm going to have to agree with you on this one. With MAC's fashion-y collaboration with Ungaro and do-gooder Viva Glam line (a portion of the proceeds go to people living with AIDS), the popular cosmetics company had a banner year. Kelly Osbourne’s Lips Are Bright and Brilliant
Beauty Digest, Celebrity Beauty, Kelly Osbourne, lipstick, mac No Comments »
Hard to believe that Kelly Osbourne used to come off like a foul-mouthed brat, isn't it? At last night's party for Flaunt magazine, the 24-year-old looked more like a punk debutante than an angsty teenager. While her hair may no longer be shocking pink, she still wears the hue with confidence on her lips. The exact color is MAC lipstick Show Orchid, a shade available only at MAC Pro stores. The key to pulling off a bold hue like this one? Stick with lipstick, not gloss, and keep the rest of your makeup simple. Cool.

While I consider myself a fairly glossy girl, with quite a well stocked beauty supply closet at home, I can admit when I've been beat . . . and I've definitely lost this purse contest.
My pal geeksugar just shared this photo of all the lipsticks, glosses, and liners she had in her purse right now. This is not all that she owns, just today. Impressive. Do any of you have her beat? Look in your bag right now and tell me what you find in the lip department.

Beauty Digest, Celebrity Poll, Lindsay Lohan, lipstick No Comments »With fair skin, reddish hair, and freckles, it's nice to see Lindsay Lohan not letting her complexion and hair color stand in the way of her adventurous beauty spirit. While I appreciate that she doesn't stick to the traditional tips for redheads, I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of any of these shades. Which lipstick do you feel looks best on her?

Maybe you've noticed I've been a tad obsessed with red lipstick lately? So, when I told Space NK founder Nikki Kinnaird I was writing a series of posts on the hot shade, she took me directly to Poppy King's Lipstick Queen shades for inspiration.
"For someone who wants to wear red but doesn't feel as confident about it, you've got Saint Red ($18) with 10% pigment level so you can have the red without feeling as though your lips are walking in before you do," she said. "For someone who loves red lipstick, Red Sinner ($18) is your perfect color red — a 90% pigment level that says in place," she added.
This got me to thinking, even if you think you would never wear red — and by the way, what's stopping you? — are you naughty or are you nice when it comes to this bold shade?
Applying a red lipstick can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Now that I've provided tips from choosing your undertone, to picking a cool red, a warm red, and a true red, you're good to go.
- Prep — Get the lips ready to hold the bold shade with a light sweep of foundation or a lip primer such as Smashbox Lid & Lip Primer ($24). Set with a dusting of translucent powder. Coty AirSpun Loose Face Powder in Translucent ($6.99) should do the trick.
- Line up — Using a lip liner in a shade or two closest to your natural lip color, line and fill in your entire lips. You can also work with a red liner if you can find an exact match to your lipstick. Never use a darker color. It can look très tacky.
- Apply — You can always do it the old fashioned straight-from-the-tube way, but I like using a lip brush for more control. Start at the center of your lips, and work outwards.
- Blot and re-apply — For a surefire way to lock in the color, blot with a tissue and apply your chosen red once more.
- Finishing touches — Make a little smudge? Clean it up with a Q-Tip and some concealer. Want some extra shine? Layer a red gloss like NP Set Lip Gloss in St. John Red ($15) or a sparkly clear one such as Bare Escentuals Buxom Lips in Dominique ($18).
Red lipstick. It's the embodiment of glamour. And a true red lipstick looks great on just about everyone since it's the perfect neutral balance. Whether you've got a sexy soiree to attend or you're just looking to add some flair to your existing makeup palette, I've got some more red lipstick tips along with some true red shade selections below:
- Formulation — Do you want a matte, dense finish or are you looking to do a sheer wash of color? Matte shades are trendy right now, but they can also make you look, uh, "mature." Glossy shades will give an illusion of larger lips.
- Go glossy — Feeling shy about going full on bold red? You can always try a red gloss to tone it down. Try Make Up For Ever Super Lip Gloss in True Red ($16).
- Small lips — Try lighter shades of red if your lips are thin. Darker shades will only make them look tinier.
- Mix things up — If you aren't loving the shade you selected, layer a gloss or another lipstick over it to correct. In a dazzle-y mood? Add an unexpected gold-flecked clear gloss to a shade that seems too cool or a platinum-flecked clear gloss over a shade that seems too warm.
